Surf Fishing Live Bait Fishing Leader
Surf Fishing Live Bait Leader
This leader is 3 feet long and made with 80 pound test mono. The line is snelled to the hook to allow free movement. Using a 6/0 Owner brand Live Bait hook. These hooks are super sharp.
This is a “Mouse-trap” style leader.
I am sure that some of you know what this is but I am going to explain it for those that don’t. Similar to a trap that actually catches mice, this leader uses a spring like mechanism with a trigger that will set the hook for you. To break it down, your fishing rod is the spring and the weight is the trigger. So, here is how it works:
1. Attach the leader to your line, add bait and cast it out. Make sure you attach a spider weight to the sliding swivel. Other weights will work as long as it holds strong on the bottom.
2. Once casted, walk your pole back to a fishing rod holder on the beach and tighten the line. The line needs to be tight enough so that it bends your pole slightly. Remember, you are setting a trap and the tighter you can get your line the better.
3. Now you wait....
4. When a fish picks up your bait, it will grab it and run. It will pull the line and the weight will stay right where it was until the line is puled far enough that the sliding weight will hit the weight stop at the top of the leader. This is the trigger that will set the trap.
5. The weight does two things - 1st the initial pull from the weight will cause the hook to penetrate the fishes mouth and the fish will run harder (this helps in the next step). 2nd once the weight is pulled from the sand, it causes the pull from your fishing rod to set the hook. Again, it is important that your line is tight.
This is one of my favorite types of leaders. I use them all the time and they work excellent.
