The Surf Rig - Surf Fishing Leader - 24” long, 400lb test, 11/0 Circle Hook
This rig is perfect for surf fishing when you are targeting any type of fish 12-48 inches. I have used this leader and caught 40”+ red fish and black drum so I know they are strong enough to handle the big fish. The 11/0 circle hook also makes it a good leader to catch the smaller fish.
The main line is 400lb mono and the line to attach the weight to is 100lb test. The weight line is designed to break away if your weight gets snagged or a big fish picks it up. This leader is also great for casting. When casting the bait and the weight are together which gives a better center of gravity for casting. In the water, the weight will set and the bait will flow with the current, allowing your bait to travel 4 feet away from the weight.
This leader is one of my favorite leaders to use. I have found that it works great in all weather conditions but it works best in the winter and when the fish are acting finicky. The 11/0 circle hook is small compared to the other leaders I make (and use) and the fish are more likely not to be so shy with this leader. I fish with this leader when the fishing is slow and it always produces. I have caught just about everything with this leader including red fish, black drum, bull whiting, bull croaker, stingrays, gafftop, catfish, hardheads, skip jack and more.
